TDEA implemented a Promoting Decent Work in Pakistan’s Brick Kilns (PWBK) project in collaboration with the Solidarity Center funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor. The project contributed towards investigating the critical factors related to brick kiln workers’ working conditions and the legal, policy, and administrative gaps that allow such conditions to exist, and advocated for decent work principles with the stakeholders. The project aimed to create a reliable source of clean bricks that advances worker rights by reducing bonded and child labor and ensuring that brick kiln workers receive fair wages and adequate healthcare access. It tried to build awareness of the decent work brick kiln framework and advocated for its adoption with relevant stakeholders, including policymakers and labor departments. The project made significant efforts to highlight the critical factors behind the brick kiln workers’ deplorable conditions and the policy, legal, and administrative gaps through a multi-dimensional research including reviewing relevant laws governing brick kiln workers, existing studies by local and international organizations, and primary qualitative research.
