WE’RE Leaders is a four-year initiative (2019-2023) undertaken by the Trust for Democratic Education and Accountability (TDEA) in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada to enhance women’s political participation in Pakistan. The project will work to improve the promotion and protection of women’s civil and political rights by the government and civil society; ensure increased and equitable participation of women, particularly the young, marginalized and at-risk, in democratic processes and civic life; and ensure improved gender-responsive systems of government, democratic institutions and civil society organizations (nationally and sub-nationally). Taking on board pivotal stakeholders such as the National and Provincial Commissions on the Status of Women, the Election Commission of Pakistan, national and provincial legislative assemblies, media, civil society and others, the project will equip 20 member organizations of the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) to engage in activities in the four provincial capitals as well as 16 additional districts. Work will focus on trainings, legislative recommendations and interventions and the facilitation of up to 300,000 unregistered women to acquire the national identity cards, essential to become registered as voters and avail other public services. Ultimately, the project aims to stimulate change in attitudes and behaviours and cultivate an enabling environment for women to fully enjoy their fundamental political and human rights.
The project is closely working with the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), the Sindh Commission on the Status of Women (SCSW) and the Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC).
