Among Trust for Democratic Education and Accountability’s (TDEA) significant contributions to democracy in Pakistan is serving as secretariat for the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), Pakistan’s most successful network of civil society groups engaged in electoral and parliamentary oversight. With TDEA’s technical and capacity-building support, FAFEN has gained both national and international recognition as a uniquely positive civil society contributor in the electoral reform process in Pakistan. FAFEN’s efforts have contributed to greater transparency and accountability in election administration. FAFEN is the first civil society network in Pakistan to have pioneered nationwide systematic observation of electoral processes. Over the years, FAFEN has:
- Gained credibility among election stakeholders including political parties, election administrative authority, etc.
- Trained and deployed over 100,000 accredited citizen observers to observe all phases of election
- Been acknowledged by the Judicial Commission formed after General Election 2013
- Proposed evidence-based, data-driven reforms; several of which were incorporated as part of the Elections Act 2017
